Mobile Resource Team

Program Description/Services

Funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Mobile Resource Team (MRT) has been in operation since 1996 and is designed to assist homeless single adults become financially self-sufficient. This goal is achieved by helping homeless individuals secure permanent housing and obtain permanent employment or enter training/education programs that will lead to permanent employment, and by providing homeless individuals with up to six months of stabilization services. Housing/Employment Specialist travel to various shelters to link homeless individuals to housing and employment services.

MRT is a comprehensive, unprecedented collaboration that fills a statewide gap in housing and employment services. Through a mobile "Team" approach, MRT staff go directly to the homeless population: building capacity throughout the state, adding resources and sharing information between mobile staff and local homeless service providers throughout Massachusetts.

The program model received national recognition in 2000 winning a competitive HUD Best Practices award.

Eligibility Requirements

Any unaccompanied adult resident of Massachusetts that fits HUD's definition of homelessness:

- People who are living in a place not meant for human habitation, in emergency shelter, in transitional housing, or are exiting an institution where they temporarily reside if they were in shelter or a place not meant for human habitation before entering the institution.

- People who are losing thier primary nighttime residence, which may include a motel or hotel or a doubled up situation, within 14 days and lack resources or support networks to remain in housing.
